Today we're pleased to release another great iPhone application: our mobile HSK test app. Loaded with almost 2000 HSK test questions, this Chinese iPhone app will help you figure out if you're ready for the HSK test. It is also an incredibly convenient tool for anyone looking to improve their Chinese but short on time. Download it right here:

Popup Chinese HSK Test Application for iPhone/iTouch:
http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/hsk-test/id382098899?mt=8

We've designed this application to be minimalist and highly usable: something you can load up quickly for a quick mental workout while on the go. On loading, the HSK iPhone app will start you off with a beginner-level test randomly generated from thousands of sample questions. If you're looking for Intermediate or Advanced HSK test materials, just tap the Popup Chinese logo at the bottom of the screen for an options menu you can use to regenerate a more difficult exam. If you have questions or require support, we encourage you to come back to Popup Chinese.

We will be charging for this application in the future. So we encourage you to download it before our next release. And if you find it useful please rate the application positively and leave a short review - this will help others find it and help support us at Popup Chinese. We also welcome direct feedback at service@popupchinese.com. As with our free iPhone character writer, we will continue to improve this application over time by adding new questions and expanding test functionality. So if you have suggestions on how we can make it more useful to you please pass them along. Enjoy!

Excellent! I do almost all of my Chinese studying on my iPhone, and I don't get to do enough of the HSK tests because of it.

Fluency is moments away now.

This is a fantastic little application which I've been using every day since I downloaded it.

Suggestions: there are still a few bugs with some of the questions, where you'll just get a list of answers but no question. It would also be really helpful to be able to go back and review the test you've just done once you finish.

Thanks for the suggestions and feedback Dave.

We'll hunt down those bugs and eradicate them before the next release of the software. Right now we're trying to keep the functionality/interface fairly simple and intuitive. We are planning to integrate the app more fully with Popup Chinese over time to provide better review of the questions people get wrong and more systematic ways to review mistakes over time, etc.

The interface is definitely one of its strengths, nice and minimalist and very professional-looking.

Another useful thing would be app-switching with the operating system 4. At the moment if I copy a question I got wrong, then switch to notepad or Pleco or something to paste the sentence, when I go back to the app it starts over with a new test rather than continuing the same one. I have no idea how the app-switching really works or how hard it is to implement, but it would certainly be useful.

I would find app-switching pretty useful too. Right now, if I don't know characters in the test, I've been hand-writing them down, and then using the iPhone's little built in character writer to look them up later.

It's not really much of a hassle, but still would be nice to be able to copy characters straight from the test, look it up, and continue where I left off.

any chance of an app for android in the future?

@kyle,

Absolutely. We're working on integrating these apps with backend vocabulary lists and tests. What is out now is the first version - once we've got the feature set ironed out, we'll be porting to other mobile devices. Android is top of the list.

I wanna get this app, but just one thing i want to find out first. please could some one tell me what beginner intermediate and advanced means in terms of the actual hsk levels, are grade 5 and 6 both incorporated in the advanced questions, if so what would you do if you only want to take grade 5 practice questions.

@samfduckett,

The app is focused on the old HSK gradiant, so beginner equates to the new level 3-4, intermediate to level 5-6, and advanced to level six too. The new test is significantly easier at the advanced levels, so if you can do well on the more difficult questions here you shouldn't have problems with the test.

Best,
