As the American economy teeters on the brink of a double-dip recession, China Bear sightings have increased significantly. A loosely-knit group of economists and critics who see stormclouds looming over the Chinese economy, China Bears have a legion of grievances: real estate is in a bubble, the banking system is saddled with non-performing loans, capital investment in the country is inefficient, the economy is tilted too heavily towards export-oriented industries, and consumer wages are inadequate to pull China towards market-led solutions to its problems. This week on Sinica, we hunt down the China Bear with expert on-the-ground opinion and fact. Which of their grievances are genuine and which risks are overblown? Joining Kaiser Kuo, Gady Epstein and Bill Bishop in our studio is Arthur Kroeber, managing director of Dragonomics and Chief Editor of the China Economic Quarterly. If you're interested in investing in China, doing business here or simply trying to understand where the real fault lines lie in the Chinese economy, this is the podcast for you.New to Popup Chinese? Great podcast. Kaiser and crew are good as always, Kroeber is excellent. I found myself nodding listening to this. Useful explanations that I think will feel intuitively right to anyone here in China. Amazed that anyone could be critical of infrastructure investments in rail, for instance.
