It's been a while, but we're pleased to release another episode of our Hollywood guessing game. This clip comes from a movie that most of you will have seen, or at least heard about. If you can identify the film from nothing more than this short Chinese excerpt, get your guess in to echo@popupchinese.com for a chance to win either a free month of premium access to Popup Chinese, or one of our few remaining and infant-sized Popup Chinese t-shirts.

Nice title, and I'm positive I got this one. I think the names are actually probably /close/ enough to give this away. Sent in my answer anyway. :)

Just a question, unrelated to this podcast (but I'm not sure where to post!): what is the relation between Popup Chinese and ChineseClass101? It seems David, Echo, and Brendan do lessons on both websites!

@orbital: Gah! I'd been telling them the names would be a giveaway, but they didn't believe me! (Though that said, I don't think I would have gotten this one -- I *did* see the movie, but for the most part I only remembered the film's attempts at Chinese.)

@blahblah: Yup, CC101 (and CantoneseClass101) and Popup Chinese are related but separate sites. The former two are being done in partnership with Innovative Language, and lessons there tend to follow their structure, whereas Popup Chinese is more freeform and targeted at more advanced learners. I'm involved mostly with Popup Chinese, but David and Echo are working their tails off on all three sites.

@blahblah,

As Brendan mentioned, ChineseClass101 is a different platform designed to follow the Innovative Language format. It has a slightly different focus and the lessons are quite different too:

That's our original launch announcement. Hope you enjoy both sites, and if you have any specific questions or suggestions, please feel free to fire away.

@Toneandcolor,

I was about to organize a massive "Poppies" letter writing campaign to bring back the defunct Film Friday, wonderful to see FF alive and kicking, still able to bring us our weekly??? dose of Hollywood movies dubbed into Chinese.

Perhaps us "Poppies" should organize a hate mail campaign directed at one Kaiser Kuo...

Hey, I can't get through to the answer page. Was it 'Serenity'?

@Tristan,

Yes, it is. Are you in China not using VPN?

It was vindicating to hear that the "Chinese" in 'Serenity' was incomprehensible. I loved that movie and the Firefly series, and experienced a terrible Doh! moment when I saw that it was the Film Friday solution. But yes, that movie's language coach was grossly overpaid, and the actors obviously didn't have access to Popup Chinese.

@Echo,

是。我是在中国不用VPN. 但是我在泡泡从来没碰到问题,只这张网页开不了。

反正,我终于猜到了一个film friday! whoop whoop!

@Tristan

在中国最近IMDB被禁止了,我也不晓得为什么,反正就是打不开了。

对了,你的中文很不错!
