Today's an exciting day for all of us here, as we get to announce the official launch of ChineseClass101.com. This is a joint project between all of us at Popup Chinese and the folks at Innovative Language Learning, who run nine of the world's best language learning companies teaching everything from Japanese and Korean to Arabic and French.If you're familiar with the Innovative Languages approach to teaching, you'll know the strength of their materials has always been tight, step-by-step progressive lessons for beginners. At Popup Chinese we've historically geared towards more advanced students, so when the opportunity arose to cooperate with the Innovative team and work together to build something we leapt at the chance, and began work designing a focused and stepwise program for Mandarin instruction. The format and focus of the resulting materials are slightly different than what we have here, and we suspect will attract a different kind of student. The content is still excellent though.Although a few hints leaked out (*ahem*), for the past few months we've worked somewhat stealthily to build the best team possible for the task. You'll find our progressive beginner lessons hosted by none other than the famous Frank Fradella. Our roster also includes the always-fantastic Amber Scorah and of course Echo Yao, Brendan O'Kane and myself. This is a great team and I can say with confidence I've never worked with a stronger one. With more than 100 lessons for beginners on the new site, our content is off to a good start. We're still squashing bugs post launch, but as Frank said once after a marathon recording session, "our first twenty lessons here teach more than I learned in a whole year studying elsewhere."Sounds great, you say, but what does this mean for Popup Chinese? The shortest answer: a brighter future. We've just had our best month ever are continuing to grow as more people find out about us. In the coming weeks and months we're going to be continuing to push the boundaries of what it means to learn mandarin online, and release some exciting features and programs that aren't available anywhere else. We're going to continue to push our platform in new directions, and are excited at the opportunity this partnership gives us to take more risks and be bolder in what we do. I hope you'll stick around for the ride.We think this is a great step forward and look forward to hearing your feedback and thoughts. It is definitely a major step forward for Chinese language education online: there's never been a better time to learn Chinese or a better way to learn it online. For everyone who has helped us come this far, we're grateful for your support and won't let you down.Best from Beijing,The Popup Team

Now that is a move! Wow!
I am at Popup mainly for its test material (well and some good dry Beijing humour on the go), and I hope that these won't suffer from the new project. Sigh - I am already a paying member of two Chinese services. And soon those will be three as Skritter more and more turns into a pivotal learning tool for me.
You know what? You guys should all melt together and form some sort of virtual enterprise.
So will Amber and Frank be in Beijing? And will we be able to get an audience with you guys during the first half of August?
:)

you've got an audience with us anytime you want one, henning. we'd actually love to drag you out to 渔佬: a Sichuan restaurant down the street that's so good Frank ate there five times in the three days after we took him there.... :)
it really is exciting and it's a great move for everyone. it'll let us focus on the things we do best here, and be even more experimental and cutting-edge (stay tuned for more news later this week....). we're also effectively doubling our production volume, so the amount and variety of learning materials for everyone is only going to grow.
Amber's in New York right now, and I don't know if she'll be here or there in August. Frank is definitely in town though and we'll look forward to having you over. be warned that you may never want to leave though. 渔佬 really is about that good.

very surprising, but I could see this as a good move. between the podcasts and the stories and the tests at your four levels there isn't a constant stream of materials of any type at my specific level (upper intermediate). if this can help address that by upping output generally I'm all for it. I want more anyway.

Interesting news. It's great to hear Amber's voice again! But CC101.com could work on its navigability a little...And I agree with Henning that I hope this doesn't mean a decrease in material here. The Absolute Beginniner lessons here have been getting better and better lately!Are there no plans to simply link to the free content you are producing for CC101 on the Popup home page?Keep up the good work.

Henning,
He's not lying. 渔佬 really is that good.
Very interesting to see the new enterprise lift off the ground. Good luck to everyone.

@toneandcolor Glad you're liking the newer content. Now that we've got a breather I think it's about time we got that plugin put up on the downloads page too. :) As far as concerns about content or material, I hope it'll become clear very quickly that these aren't a concern. At the very least, we've got an HSK Listening test and a Short Story scheduled for publication later today, and more podcasts later in the week along with an entirely new experimental feature that we think can become a new core part of the site (I'm excited but also debugging so will keep things cryptic). On an ongoing basis the extra work we'll have is really not that significant, especially once you realize weve got a larger and smarter team devoted to getting everything done. In short, this'll be a lot of fun all around. :)

@henning & yuehan,
我能作证,渔佬的菜的确好吃(以至于我们几乎天天顿顿在那儿吃),那儿的烤鱿鱼是我的最爱!

I really enjoy the lessons on Popup Chinese, especially the fact that they are based on natural language. But one thing I think they could benefit from is the kind of targeted review exercises that are attached to each lesson on CC101. Are there any plans to introduce this format here?

Hi Tom - what exercises do you find the most useful? we'll be introducing new features and exercises over time, but not by just replicating features found elsewhere.
CC101 and Popup Chinese are going to be very complementary over time, but we've got a lot of work to do to reconcile the backend systems. CC101 is a very focused and hierarchical learning platform right now, while Popup Chinese is open-ended and more suitable for hybrid online/offline courses, etc.

The parts I find most useful are the expansion section; the questions on content, vocab and writing; and the lesson-specific flashcards. I think these tools make it easier to retain new vocab because you're being tested immediately, and they're also convenient for reviewing as you don't have to go back through the entire lesson. I know you guys have the audio review, which is very useful too, but personally I find it a lot easier to retain vocab if I know the characters. What about making a shorter version of your HSK-style tests for each lesson? Just my two cents.

@Tom,
Thanks, Tom. I think your suggestion is very good, and it can definitely represent a certain amount users' thoughts too. We've got a few lessons already have them, and we would think about adding them to more.

Popup Chinese is hiring: quick note to let you all know we're currently seeking native English speakers with great Chinese for help with part-time podcast and content development. Our requirements are that you need to have good Chinese, be fun, and already be living here in Beijing (we can't hire from abroad). Experience traveling throughout China would also be useful.If you're interested please drop Echo a note at echo@popupchinese.com. Tell us a bit about yourself and include a phone number where we can reach you. A formal resume is not required. And if this doesn't describe you but might be suitable for a friend, please do us and them a favor and pass along the notice.Best,-- The Popup Team
