@Broncon007,To my knowledge, the usage of 发觉 is much closer to the English verb, "realize" and 发现 is more like the verb, "find" or "discover".EG: 哥伦布发现了新大陆。Columbus discovered a new continent.发觉 cannot be used in that way, you couldn't say, 哥伦布发觉了新大陆 (Columbus realized a new continent).
@brocon007,Like what Xiao Hu said, just add one more point:发现 also has the meaning "to realize", so 发现 and 发觉 can be interchangeable when you want to say "to realize". The slight difference is: 发觉 is always talking about something you can "feel" and then "realize". --Echoecho@popupchinese.com

发现 = aware or realize, some feelings or ideas no exsit before. 我发现自己爱上你了， there is no love at the begining, but one day i realized it.while 发现 = find/discover, focus on the result, and means the thing being found is existing before that action.
