@miami_meiguoren,

I asked the same question as you did a while back, and I found that actually, there was no good way to type pinyin, with proper tone marks, on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, at least not a way that lived up to the usability standards otherwise generally embodied by these devices. So, I set out to create an app to fill that gap. I call it Pinyin Typist, and it is now available on the App Store:

http://itunes.apple.com/app/pinyin-typist/id443069995?mt=8

Official web site: http://troubadourworks.com/pinyintypist/

Give it a try. I think you'll like it!

Welcome to the Popup Chinese manikab. Suggest you start by bookmarking your first twenty Absolute Beginner lessons - you should have received an email encouraging you to do that. If you're feeling adventurous, the rest of our Absolute Beginner lessons are right here:

http://popupchinese.com/lessons/absolute-beginners

Our goal is to have every Absolute Beginner lesson accessible to someone with no previous Chinese knowledge. Also remember that we're here to help as well. If you have any questions or problems, send us an email or leave a comment on the site.

Does anyone know how I can type pinyin with tone marks using an ipad?

It's probably the same as using an iPhone / iPod.

Thanks

@miami_meiguoren,

I can't see any way to do this under our iTouch here (Chinese/English). I suppose you could always use http://adsotrans.com to convert to pinyin, but that is a really roundabout way of doing it, and the iPhone at least doesn't support multitasking (not sure about the iPad... it hasn't been released in China).

I'll ask the next time we're at the Apple store here though.

Best,

@ trevelyan No it doesn't really allow multi-tasking either, thanks anyway though.

I found a way around it.
