These lessons examine "tonal cousins": groups of semi-homophone characters that have the same pronunciation, but may or may not have the same tone. Simply click on the appropriate tone for each character and improve your tonal production and recognition.

This quiz analyzes the syllables [cun], [dun], and [hun]. There's a mix of familiar, first-year characters, as well as some more uncommon, morphologically bound items.

@toneandcolor,

These three syllables are very difficult to pronounce accurately even to some Chinese people. Very useful test!

Also, don't know why it reminds me of a joke: "结婚?我看你是发昏!".

Nice test. Finding I'm getting about 75% on most of these, with guessing. The colors on the text page seem off, by the way.

@bonita.delmonte

Yeah, the colors seem a little buggy to me too. Sometimes they come up and sometimes they don't. Everything seems to be tagged correctly so perhaps it's a browser-specific issue. I'm using Firefox 3.0.8 on Mac OS 10.4.11.

@toneandcolor - I'll take a look at it later today. If the markup is correct the color should display properly, so any problem will be on our end.
