As always, only one of the four answers is proper given either the grammatical structure of the sentence or its context. These type of fill-in-the-blank questions constitute a major portion of the HSK exam at the intermediate level, so you should get good at them. For Q1 how would one translate 多元 in the sentence 生活是一道多元方程?
= Life is like a "mutifaceted" equation?
The dictionary does not provide any useful clues...

Actually it should be "mutivariate".

Wow - the HSK sure is hard --- certainly the correct answer given the context, but with the context you need to know so many naunces of the each word to get to the right answer...
