Wang Juan is an independent singer with a spectacular voice who has drifted from band to band and genre to genre over the years. Known as Xiao Juan to her fans, she first came to our attention as lead singer of the electronica duet Gemini Trip. Lately, she has traded that in for something closer to folk.

The video below is the only one she has ever made to our knowledge. As with her previous songs, this one is characterized by a simple and repetitive refrain. And the lyrics are easy but sweet: a love song about her home, and the lover who has made it just for her.

If you are in China and have the chance to see Wang Juan live you should seize it. She performs regularly at the MIDI festival in Beijing, and makes frequent appearances at Mao Club by Nanluoguxiang.

This is an interesting choice. Not sure if you know, but the drummer died in police custody earlier this year.

we're loosely aware of it, but don't know the details of the case.

I had a friend whose parents believed in that stuff. And I understand people need hope when they're sick, but preying on their weaknesses and encouraging them not to seek medical treatment when it can help is simply inappropriate and unethical.

China needs to get its medical insurance system in better shape. It is better than most people believe though, at least for small and fairly obvious problems. But getting a proper diagnosis for more difficult/chronic diseases is a nightmare, and the current system does not cut it. Only hope is to improve it so that people live healthier and longer lives and aren't as susceptible to this sort of superstition.
