Even those in China can be forgiven for having missed "Where Have All the Flowers Gone", an independent film promptly banned on release in 2000 under allegations it romanticized teen suicide.Quietly resurrected for legal distribution in 2002, the film is a real accomplishment for its young director and remarkable cast. If the camera lingers heavily on Xia Yu and Zhou Xun, the real star of the film in our opinion is Pu Shu, whose songs grace the soundtrack and help root the film's artistic yearnings in simple nostalgia for friends and times long gone. "Those Flowers" is slower than most of his other songs, but also one of his best.
If you liked this version, be sure to check out Fan Fan's popular and grammatically-challenged cover. Also worth listening to are a few recordings of Wang Fei covering it live in concert as well.
Fantastic stuff!!!
They've had that Fan Fan cover on rotation for AGES at a clothing store down the street from where I live, but I'd never picked out a lot of the words. The mouseover annotations are great, by the way. This site gets two thumbs way up.
Another movie I liked is Little Dressmaker.
Particularly the scene she decided to leave her village which surrounded by mountains in Sichuan.
Although Chinese women had achieved political right, her decesion of leaving was still bold and adventurous during Cultural Revolution period.
@leanne,
(我也练习用一下英文,如果有错误还请大家帮忙啊)I recommended this website to two Chinese teachers and they both think it is pretty good. They also introduced the site to their students. Very promising site, good luck for you guys! I am sure that I will come often too.
Hopefully I can make some foreign friends here too.
