By the time their supervisor from the Ministry of Education arrived, the HSK police had already settled on their subject. It sat strapped to a chair in one of their interrogation vans, blinking in mute terror as the murder investigation swirled around it. Outside, the victim lay cold in the gutter as the police catalogued the remains of the crime scene. "We found it not far from the body," the head detective explained with a sidewards sneer. "This one was easy.""Then you've bungled this badly," the man from the Ministry announced, walking over and unstrapping the suspect. "This conjunction could never have been anywhere near the murder weapon. His presence in that context would be grammatically impossible." The man's voice was filled with the weary resignation which comes from seeing the worst of the worst in test-prep butchery. "You guys flubbed this badly tonight. I'd suggest you show better smarts with your other leads before I send you back to the HSK Beginner level for this screw-up."

How long again should this sort of test be taking?

12 minutes. You've got about 45 seconds per question.

Great, looks like I've got timing under control then.

@menglelan - that would be me. sometimes we embellish. :)
@imron - I've been getting a lot faster on these ones myself. The advanced HSK questions are still another matter, but practice really does make perfect on the Intermediate and Beginner stuff.

I've been doing a number of things recently to try and boost my reading speed, and I think that helps greatly as well.

@shitface,The right answer to #2 is 对于 not 由于. The sentence should be 我对于社会工作一直没有多大的兴趣 (I've never have that much interest in social work). Where I get confused with 由 is usually more in sentences where it seems replaceable with 被. I tend to translate the former into "of" and the latter as "by".I'm more curious why it's 对于 instead of 对 for what it's worth. Are both of those acceptable answers and what's the difference in meaning between one and the other. Maybe this is something for the PC staff to answer.

@shitface,
由于 means due to or because of. As orbital said, the correct answer to question 2 is 对于 not 由于. For 由于, you can make sentence like : 由于工作太忙,他们很久没见面了。(They haven't seen each other for a long time due to work.)
