"Do we have an HSK test ready to go?" It was the end of our day here in Beijing. Far beyond the brick walls of our hutong enclave, the sounds and smells of night were descending on the city. If you listened for it you could faintly hear the bustling crowds on Guijie, their conversations and laughter snaking its way through the lantern-lit street.Echo looked up from her monitor, on which was sprawled yet another Korean soap opera. "There's one in the beginner section," she nodded quietly. "It's actually really tough, and there are some tricky questions on tense there. It will be hard for anyone to get perfect."So consider yourself warned, and good luck.

I'll bite. Why is the correct answer to question #10 了 instead of 过? The sentence is pretty clearly in the past tense, no?

Wow! I felt really good about this one and bombed it. 7/15.

@saunders,
For Q 10, it is in a very short time of the past, and also the movement happened in the sentence is not doing anything with the present.
That's why we'd pick up 了 rather than 过.

Two quick questions:
Could someone clarify the distinction between 刚刚 and 刚才 in number 2? I thought they were basically synonyms.
In number 9, I thought you could use 对 for 有关系。 I guess I'm thinking of 有兴趣?

Sure: 2b, 3a, 6d, 8b, 9d, 12a, 13d, 14b.

toneandcolor,that was my mistake also - because I confused the two. 刚才 is much more immediate (couple minutes or even seconds) while 刚 or 刚刚 are more a neutral "recently". Besides that one I am happy today :)

@toneandcolor & sashafer,
Q2, 刚才 is used in the past tense, such as 刚才出去的是谁? 刚刚 can be used in the present tense. When people use 刚刚, it always shows that the movement is still related to the present. In Q2, 他在国外住了3年,现在刚刚回来,means he has just come back and he's still in this country right now.
Q6, d is correct. Q8, b is correct too.
Q9, English speakers are more like to pick up 对 in this question. "和 sb. 有关系" is a set combination though.
Q12, 都 is the only adverb which can emphasize 已经, and express the speaker's tone of dissatisfaction.

No kidding sashafer. I actually cringed when I saw my score. Ended up getting 9/15 with wipe-outs on questions 2, 6, 7, 10, 12 and 15.
