We screened this film for our crew earlier in the week and were surprised how well it stood up. The only touchy point came when our hero whipped out his Motorola, at which point the Chinese Commentariat couldn't keep from remarking on the sheer size of his mobile behometh. So cherish what you've got, because time flies. And if you know this movie get your guesses in to echo@popupchinese.com too.

On the subject of films... I don't know if this is obvious or not. When I first started watching Chinese films (as in from China) I'd watch with English subtitles.

However as time has gone on I realised this often isn't that much of a help. They're either out of sync which is distracting, or take liberties with the translation.

When I watched the Red Cliff films this had both English and Chinese subtitles, perfectly in sync. That was brilliant!

So I thought I'd try something new and watch some bad Chinese films (so I didn't care if I didn't quite understand what they were saying :-) with just Chinese. I think it's better. I often pause and get out my Pleco and sketch a character I don't recognise. If I miss something well, it's probably some terrible romantic comedy anyway it's no loss :)

What I'd love though is more stuff done like the Red Cliff hard subs. That doesn't seem easy to get hold of though...
