In this podcast Echo, Liu and 9527 hit our studio for a show about Saturday morning cartoons in China. And if you think they're going to chat about Superfriends or Rocket Robin Hood you're sadly mistaken. Not only is there no English in today's show, there are no non-Asian shows either. So even if you're an advanced student you may want to click through to our vocabulary section to familiarize yourself with the subject matter before listening.

Why cartoons? The catalyst for this has been some good news for Liu, who just picked up a job doing voice acting for the new animated edition of The Monkey King set for release later this year. Congratulations Liu. We fully expect everyone in mainland China to know you as "that guy from Popup Chinese" in a couple of years, but don't let that go to your head....

This podcast is above my level, but I liked the intro. Would guess that one of you must be Canadian. I grew up watching Rocket Robin Hood. Good memories.

I think she once told me she had the name from one drama. She played one drama, and was named 9527 in it. She keeps the name from then on. If someone asks why your name is 9527, she usually asks my family name is 95 and my given name is 27.

as I know, 9527 is from a movie named Flirting Scholar(唐伯虎点秋香），by Stephen Chow. He was called 9727 in the training seminar...

It is really an interesting movie. I suggest you watch it...

@ians - Kung Fu Hustle was great. I really liked his Monkey King comedy 大话西游 as well. Totally hilarious, although I had no clue what was happening the first time I watched it until a friend took pity and explained what was going on.

@Marco64 & ians. If you are a fan of Kung Fu Hustle and Stephen Chow(周星驰) you should check out one of his earliest films called "God of Cookery 食神". It is one of those movies that you don't have to understand every word spoken to get the jokes. Really good physical humor with an interesting and outlandish storyline. you can easily find a mandarin dubbed version on www.youku.com

Has anyone seen Empire of Silver 白银帝国 yet? I'm still deciding if I want to pay the money to see it in the theaters. Looks pretty interesting.

i really like the movie Chinese Odyssey(大话西游）, and have watched it for several times. i think all the early movies of Stephen Chow are quite funny..:-)

I'm a really big TV fan (at least back in the US I used to be) so one of the ways that I try to increase my listening comprehension and vocabulary is to catch Chinese TV. Unfortunately CCTV is not synonymous with Quality. I've been trying to find a good Chinese TV series that has a good entertainment value. I'm looking for suggestions on what to watch.
