Discovered in a bundle of personal effects years after Popup Chinese morphed into the world's leading educational-military conglomerate, Echo Yao's secret diary paints a different portrait of the organization's early history than that found in the sanitized corporate histories which would follow. And while the authenticity of this material cannot be verified beyond all doubt, these fragmentary recordings offer historians a fascinating window into working class life in China at the start of the 21st century.

OMG! This is absolutely hilarious! Definitely agree with XiaoHu, long live Popup Chinese! One of my favorite lines is: 现在我才知道男人的诺言多不可靠,特别是开中文网站的混蛋男人.

@Echo,

我觉得Echo's Secret Diary值得成为一个长期的系列。我恨不得知道下次 Echo 会把什么样的秘密告诉她亲爱的日记。也恨不得知道天子会不会发现Echo写的秘密日记。这些悬疑很紧张。

嘘,秘密...

@Echo:

Can the 划 in 指手划脚 be pronounced 划 both hua4 and hua2? My dictionaries give different answers.

@murrayjames,

The meanings are different: when it's second tone, it usually means to scratch or cut the surface of sth with a sharp object, like 我的手上划了一道口子. In 指手划脚, it has to be fourth tone, because it means making gestures (while talking). It can also be written as 指手画脚.

@crusty_138,

想起你说的要给Squeak一条大鱼的事了,现在Squeak已经严重超重了,正在减肥中....

@Echo,

Thanks for your response. I was actually referring to the expression 指手划脚. DeFrancis' ABC Dictionary provides both zhi3shou3hua2jiao3 and zhi3shou3hua4jiao3 as possible pronunciations.

What you said makes sense, though. I'll stick with hua4.

@murrayjames,

It should only be zhi3shou3hua4jiao3 :)
