The deuce? Works for me. I always called it the victory sign, which got old pretty quickly one you realized people weren't actually celebrating anything. Just totally random.
I give it a couple of years before people start doing this in major American cities too. I personally import the tradition every time I'm back now.

@sseamon - this is really strange. There is definitely a bug somewhere we'll have to track down. At least we know we're not crazy - it was up earlier.Republishing should fix the problem. Yeah, there it is. Really strange and silly. Sorry for the inconvenience guys -- I'll definitely be looking into this. :(

What is the difference between wang3 and dong4? They were both translated at as "move"

Any of the teachers can correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is like this:往 is typically only used for directions, like move to your right, move to your left. You can't use 动 to say 动右 or 动左 etc.动 is used to mean any action at all, in this case it is used to say like 'stay as you are' so that the picture can be taken.There might be an easier way to explain it than that, but worth a try :).

@magdalence.friesen& craigrut,Firstly, a better translation of wang3 is toward rather than to move. Also, dong4 is a verb while wang3 actually is a preposition. So dong4 can be used independently, but wang3 need to be used with other verbs. The structure is wang3+direction/ location+verb. 你们好！我有一个问题。。其实两个问题。What does it mean when you add 是 before a verb? Like when Echo said in one of the comments "你是住在中国的南方吗?" and I know for example "你是做什么的？” means “What do you do?/What is your job?" but I don't understand what the 是 is there for.My other question is how to use the ending particles like 啊，呀，哦，哦。。。Are they all just used to express surprise or doubt..? Also when should you use one or the other? I'm guessing this may just be something you learn through practicing with native speakers.

Usually 啊 and 呀 are used to express surprise or emphasize something. 哦 is used to say that you have already known something.
