I refer you to Laozi on user interface design, in Chapter 3 of the Daode Jing:

...不見可欲,使心不亂。是以聖人之治,虛其心,實其腹,弱其志,強其骨。常使民無知無欲。使夫知者不敢為也。為無為,則無不治。

"...By not displaying things they will desire, [the sage-king] causes [the commoners'] minds not to be troubled. So it is that in the government of the sage-king, he empties their minds and fills their bellies, weakens their wills and strengthens their bones. Constantly he causes the commoners to be without knowledge or desire, and where there are those with knowledge, he keeps them from daring to take action. Through the practice of non-purposive action, nothing is left ungoverned."
