Watching ping-pong in China you hear the word 削球 a lot. Does this mean slice (a diagonal shot that puts strong backspin on the ball)? Is 削球 used in tennis as well?

EDIT: Is it xiao1qiu2 or xue1qiu2 ?

Yes, you can also use it in tennis and badminton. It should be xiao1 here. You want to pronounce xue1 in more formal terms, like 削弱 (to weaken) or 削足适履 (to use impractical means to solve a problem).
