Dear Popup Chinese,

I am (obviously) new to this website and still a bit at lost as to how I use your Chinese lessons.

To give you a better picture as to where I am right now, let me say that I enjoy using the flash cards, review quiz, and learning from "news in Chinese", but when it comes to the topics I am still a bit confused.

I have tried listening to some elementary level topics, and admittedly, I did not listen to the whole recording because they appear to be recordings of people speaking in English. I waited for some time and thought they would start talking in Chinese, and fast forwarded somewhat but kept hearing English conversations.

Could someone please help me to understand how to use this website?

Thank you and regards..

@meiyou,

Which show have you listened to that didn't have Chinese? Most of the elementary shows will feature a Chinese-language dialogue within the first thirty to forty seconds or so. Do you have a link? The only English-only discussions on the site should be the Sinica shows, which should be clearly marked as non-regular lessons!

Best,

Dear David,

Thank you for your reply and thank you for showing me the right direction. Apparently I did visit the Sinica shows which apparently featured English only conversations. This was because I actually wanted to visit the Elementary shows but found nothing to click on to start the show. This problem I think only surfaced when I used my tablet to access the shows. I was only able to access the Sinica shows with my tablet. As I am now using my PC, I am able to access the Elementary show recordings with ease. Thank you once again.

But now comes my second question: How do I access the transcript to the conversation? When I tried clicking on the PDF format of what I thought would be the transcript, I was directly linked to the "upgrade to premium account" page. I understand that the free part of the website is supposed to provide transcripts as well. Have I committed another mistake?

Thank you and regards,

@meiyou,

Yeah, the transcripts are reserved for site supporters. On the tablet front, the problem is probably that the audio player isn't appearing since it is flash based. If that is the case, you can always grab the shows from our free iTunes feed and transfer them to your tablet manually:
