When native Chinese person sees new, unknown character - how one learns it? :

-knows pronunciation and meaning by basing it on/from radicals

or

-has to check pronunciation and meaning(if yes - where? in dictionary?) and memorize it to use later?

or

other way - how?

I asked my wife. She says:

Usually she just passes by the character (without looking it up), and infers its meaning from context. Sometimes she'll ask someone nearby by describing the character components. Sometimes she'll Baidu the character: typing the radical name(三点水、宝盖头, etc.) and character components, then something like 怎么读、怎么念 or 哪个字.
