Obviously we recommend Popup Chinese, James. How long have you spent listening to Popup Chinese, and have you worked your way through the Absolute Beginner materials? If you are not capable of tackling them yet, Pimsleur has some good but very rudimentary lessons that can cover for your first 10-50 words and phrases.

The best way to learn how to write the characters is to write the characters.

Like with a paper. And pen, Or even a pencil.

It really is important to get the order of strokes correct. Mdbg.net has all that shit, including radicals, and stroke order. That would be a good place to start.
