A mere two hours after he had ordered the mission, the President read his security briefing with a seething fury, his thoughts as stormy as the clouds darkening the skies above Washington. His administration could deal with a partisan Congress. And no-one expected a free ride from the media on issues of national security. But to face what must either be gross incompetence or deliberate obstruction from his own military advisers? He reached for the phone....

This lesson packs in a lot of great vocabulary. Hat's off to you guys for another creative, interesting, and valuable lesson!

On the subject of the president, has anyone seen those posters of 毛巴马? It's basically an old photo of Chairman Mao with his hand raised up, but it's been photoshopped with Obama's face on it. It's absolutely hilarious. I was in Beijing last week and saw one in a restaurant, people were taking photos of themselves next to the poster all throughout dinner.

座,家,和栋等等这些表示楼或者建筑的量词有什么差异?

。。。

而且,差异,差距,区别怎么不一样?上面我刚刚写的句子应该用哪个?大概都是difference,对不对?我想表明的是"What's the difference between..."

谢谢你的辛苦

@Daniu,

差异 and 差距 both emphasise a disparity or a gap while 区别 just simply indicates a difference, or a way to distiguish between two or more things. So if you want to ask about the difference between certain things, it's best to use 区别.

Use the following sentence pattern, A和B的区别是什么?

To me it doesn't make sense to say A和B的差距 or 差异是什么? That's like asking, what's the discrepency between A and B?

座 and 栋 are both classifiers for tall buildings, but I'd say that Chinese people almost exclusively say, 栋. I rarely hear anyone say,一座楼 they only say 一栋楼.

家 is a classifier for families, businesses and companies.

Of course, I'm not a native speaker, so it's probably best to get Echo 老师 to confirm this before entering it into the Popup Chinese annals.

@Daniu & Xiao Hu,

Xiao Hu has given a very good answer to Daniu's comment. I will just add a few more points here.

差异 is a formal way to say 区别, and people use 区别 (or 不同) more often. Also, except being a noun, 区别 can also be a verb. For instance, 怎样区别座、栋和楼这三个词.

The meaning of 差距 is slightly different from the other two. It has the meaning "gap or lacking", and always talks about something which is not as good as another thing. For example, 他的中文和大山有很大差距,还需要努力学习. It has the meaning that 他的中文不如大山.

For the measures, except what Xiao Hu said, 栋 is usually used in front of building are tall and straight up and down, like 大楼,大厦 etc. You can use 座 in front of 山,寺庙,雕塑, they don't have to be straight.

@Echo,

哈哈,我想起来了,Tastyburger的名字让我想起的电影原来就是《低俗小说》。塞缪尔·杰克逊 说的一句经典话,“嗯,这就是一个tastyburger!”

《低俗小说》这部片子你又没有看过?
