We don't like to play favorites when it comes to our dialogues, but there's something charming about the performance Andy turns in today as a compulsive liar with an almost desperate need to be liked. He gives his character such enthusiastic and infectious likability we think it's easy to ignore the fact that nothing he says is even remotely close to being plausible. So we find this one charming anyway, and hope you like it too.

As far as our subject matter goes, this podcast is inspired by the Pop Cap game of the same name, and is intended for anyone with a fair bit of mandarin under their belt who has ever been tasked with translating a John Carpenter film into Chinese. It is tragic that more textbooks don't teach vocabulary for describing the undead. While you may not use this at the office, it will surely be high frequency vocabulary on that fateful day the dead rise from their graves and shotgun prices go vertical. Best to prepare in advance.

僵尸现在特别流行。但是其它的网站都不敢讨论僵尸。 上个月有一个大电影,Zombieland(僵尸国 ??)。

Yeah, yeah...that's the ticket!!!

@Xiao Hu,

I don't really get the ‘太笨了你’。 Is it just a set phrase, or could you stick a different adjective in there?
 said on
March 12, 2012
@strawberry,

No, it's not a set phrase, this is another way to say ‘你太笨了’. ‘你太。。。。。。了’ is a structure we use to say somebody is too...(adjective). For example, 你太笨了 means you are too dull. We also can say you are too smart using this structure, that would be 你太聪明了.

PS: Just like in the dialogue, the speaker says 太笨了你, when you use this structure, you can always put the 你 at the end of this sentence. For instance, you can change 你太聪明了 to 太聪明了你。

@strawberry,

Moving the subject to the end of a simple and short sentence is very casual and colloquial. You can talk to your friend like this. It doesn't change the meaning of the sentence.

Cool! So, could I say, '太好看了電影‘ to get a 'What a good film that is!' kind of effect, or is this just for addressing people?

@strawberry,

"太好看了这(部)电影" is better. You can use this pattern both for addressing things and people.
