The government had first dismissed rumours of the city's impending water scarcity, yet as the months dragged on and the supply trucks grew less and less frequent, public denial morphed into slow acceptance as the city baked. In time, even the moat around the Forbidden City drained to nothing, its dry stones picked clean by the dessicated husks of those who remained, parched shadows of their former selves.

Learning Chinese? This is an upper-level recording that features an original movie trailer. If your Chinese is getting up there, take a listen and see how much you understand. While we don't walk through the recording line-by-line, David and Grace do point out some of the more difficult bits, including some revolutionary language you may not yet know. So take a listen and let us know what you think.

Hello,

I add this list of vocabulary on my account , but when I select the vocabulary of this lesson it adds me some other words like : 干 and translate to : to fuck , verb ...

or 帮 without translation ...

Hum maybe it's a bug , or I'm not used to popup chinese yet (new student).

see you

:) it's not a bug.干 have many means.first mean:dry,2nd:means "do".the means "to fuck"is come from "do". because "make love" is vrey tired just like in a manual labor.The vocabulary is a slang when it as a verb 'do'

What does the 帮 in this context?

@iishanami,

It's a measure word here for a group of people. Usually critically as with 一帮土匪 ("a band of bandits"), 一帮混蛋 (“a bunch of assholes"), but not necessarily since you can equally say something like 我在西单碰到一帮老朋友 ("I ran into a bunch of old friends at Xidan"), etc.

Thanks for your reply!

In place of 处置他们 can we also use 处理?And what is the difference?

@iishanami ,

The easiest way to remember the difference between these two words is : 处置 somebody and 处理 something

i.e. 李警官在处理他的案子,不知道会怎么处置他。

Officer Li is dealing with his case, don't know how he's going to handle/deal with him.

处置 somebody: usually it's in a situation when the person has done something bad/ wrong/ illegal.

Hi!

You mention that 地主 is no longer used as 'landlord'.

You said something like xiao3jia1 小家 and xiao3hu2.

I didn't find it in the dictionary. Can you explain me these words?
