Just getting started learning Chinese? Today we offer you a lesson containing assault, battery, and just a touch of the future tense. Not that Chinese really has a future tense, but if you want to talk about things that haven't happened yet, we have everything you need to get started in a dialogue that's so simple even an absolute beginner can handle it.

"BATTARY" is not a word. That should be "BATTERY", just like word for an electric storage cell or a gun emplacement. FYI: "ASSAULT", as in "ASSAULT AND BATTERY", is the "THREATENING" of violence and "BATTERY" is the "VISITATION" of violence.

@sasquatch1691,Thanks for the heads up. The spelling was bothering me too, although I did look it up somewhere. Rechecking now and it seems obviously wrong. :(--david

@unamarinka,对,“抽” 也是“打”的意思。在北方,“消xiao1”和“揍zou4”有“打”的意思;)

@ma1942 会...的 and 要...了 both are used for future tense. 会...的 implies "hope, promise, warning or threat" i.e. 飞机会起飞的;我会打你的。 要...了 usually is just a statement. i.e. 我要走了。飞机要起飞了。So technically they are not interchangeable.冬天来了,(geese? or just birds?) 鸟儿们要飞回南方了。

HiIn practice are they interchangeable though? If you used one instead of the other by mistake would it sound odd? I am struggling a bit with tenses.Thanks!

@xiaozhuzhu,They both are used in future tense. It would sound off if you used one instead of the other by mistake simply because 会...的 has more emotions in it and 要...了 is just a statement. That being said, to be safe, 要...了 can be used more often if you are not sure what the emotions are, in that case, people can still understand you no problem.

Would "you dare to laugh at me" be "ni gan3 xiao4 wo" ? "You dare to speak to me" "ni gan3 shou1 wo"?

@mapodofu,Yes! ni3 gan3 xiao4 wo3 is correct. ni3 gan3 shuo1 wo3 means"you dare to lecture me?" or " you dare to talk about me?"

'I'm really gonna give it to you' made me chuckle: immature. I wanna thank you guy for this awesome resource, the first time I have found a lesson that seems casual enough not to feel like a real class.
