Iron Chicken knows which way the winds are blowing. It knows how much that shirt sells for at the Chegongzhuang Discount Market, and it isn't afraid of telling you straight out. So don't try to pull one over the Iron Chicken. It will not pity you. It will stick fast to its ideals of fairness, justice and affordable cotton casual-wear. And if you still insist on your ridiculous markup, it will walk away. Because the Iron Chicken does not need you. It does not need anyone.

@ckristiansen,

对,意思是group,一般是有点儿不太好的不太尊敬的意思,比如这儿有一帮流浪汉。

In 这帮铁公鸡了, is 帮 a 量词?

@oyamakuma,

是的。“帮” is a casual way to say "a group of ". "群"and"帮"are interchangeable when they are used as 量词。

i.e.这帮铁公鸡= 这群铁公鸡

这帮人真无聊= 这群人真无聊

@oyamakuma,

Just one thing to be careful: when you use 帮 as a measure word, it can imply a negative feeling towards the object after 帮. It usually indicates that you disagree or dislike the object. 群 doesn't have this meaning, so sometimes they can not be interchangeable. For example: 一群鸟从远处飞了过来 (A bunch of birds flew over from afar). Here is not suitable to use 帮, because 鸟 in this sentence doesn't have a negative meaning.

several times David says what sounds like 小语 to express what in English would be `idiomatic expression'. Can anyone tell me exactly what this word is that he is using?

口语 would be colloquial Chinese. Is that it?

Definitely not saying 口语, clearly sounds like `xiao yu' but that i don't understand. I don't know what the hanzi would be.

Listen at 9:39- 9:40 on the lesson audio.

In English there are distinctions like:

proverbs

idioms

slang

成语 are like what we would call proverbs.

俚语 apparently is what in English we cal `slang', though I don't know if this usage is current.

But I'm trying to figure out the best way to express the idea of `idiom'.
