Zhang Xuan is an upcoming singer from Taiwan who got her start playing in bars and other live music venues in Taipei. "Baby" is probably her most famous song, and we hope you'll like it as much as we do. A simple love song set to acoustic guitar, the lyrics have a childlike sense of wonder and endearment. That's the feeling we get from the constantly doubled lyrics, at least. They're sweet.

On a closing note, it's worth mentioning that Zhang released her newest album "City" earlier this year. None of the songs on it are yet as recognizable as this one, but we think it is going to be her breakout album, so you might want to check it out the next time you're in a music shop.

Nice song. She looks and sounds like Jewel (Jewel Kilcher) in the 90s.

Yeah, I really like her and this song. Her new band is pretty interesting too - their style is a lot closer to alt rock than mandopop.

@magnus - http://mp3.baidu.com is great for grabbing Chinese music if you know what you're looking for. This girl's name is 张悬 and the song title is 宝贝. Should be plenty of copies online, although I don't know what the download speeds will be like since they pretty much only index Chinese servers.

magnus there's a number of tools which will let you capture flv from any flash video web. Then it's a question of running that through a tool to grab the audio out of it.

I'd suggest it's probably just easier to google for the album torrent or something...

Loving the KTV stuff too. Weird thing was I heard Sa DingDing on the radio recently, it was the Mandarin version of Alive too, which I don't think is as good as Sanskrit but it was pretty amazing to hear mandarin on the radio...

@magnus

I use top100.cn for my Chinese song downloads. Easy to use format, no software to download and no spamming. The website is all in Chinese though, but hey that's the point right?

this is a jewel rip-off thats not even half as good, much the same way faye wong tries to imitate dolores oriordan and fails embarassingly and cheer chen thinking shes juliana hatfield but lacking the attitude. i still wish for a day when chinese music becomes original and creative in its own right.

Hi David,

Glad you like Popup Chinese. If you're in China some of the videos will be blocked because they're hosted on Youtube, in which case they just won't load. Assuming this is the problem, you can always try downloading the music directly from Baidu, which has a pretty good MP3 search:

http://mp3.baidu.com

If you have trouble finding any of the songs just write Echo and she can give you their names in Chinese, etc.

Best,

I love this song so much... it inspired me to make a music video with it at my school, 滑铁卢大学

I spent a lot of time subtitling, its much more clearer than the video posted here.
