Now that you're getting married it's time for a short digression. Assuming you're like most people who've clawed their way to some modicum of Chinese competence through traditional language schools, you've likely been taught that 了 indicates past tense and that 过 indicates past tense too. Oddly, an astounding number of people never get past this. We've even run into intermediate and advanced students with a decent feel for mandarin who can't explain the difference between these two simple particles.

So in the spirit of striking a blow for clarity and setting-things-straight-once-and-for-all, this is the lesson where Echo and Brendan wade into the morass of aspectual particles and set things right. So if you've ever been confused by the difference between the two or are just looking for a quick refresher, listen to this free Chinese podcast, and enlightenment will dawn.

Is there something going on with the website? I pulled this page up in Firefox to find no audio lesson. Thinking it was a browser issue, I then tried with IE9 but with the same result.

Thanks for the heads up clickertricks and everyone who emailed us. We've just re-uploaded and republished, so it should be fixed now. :)

Hey, I have one question about 了 and 过。Earlier today I got a text from a friend which required a long answer so I said I would send an email. They sent an text back with their email address which I already had so I sent a text back saying "发过“, using 过 rather than 了 to emphasize that I had already sent it. Will they have understood the distinction or should I have just used 了?

@j.stewartwallace,

Both are fine -- it's the difference between "I've sent it" and "I just sent it". 发了 is a lot more common, but people will use 发过 if they want

to specify the date or time, as in "I sent it two days ago", etc.

Best,
