We've seen things you people wouldn't believe. An infestation of QQ chat programs so thick and furious they set a motherboard on fire, download managers that corrupt all they touch like the grim reapers of the software world. We have seen virii blossom across networks like flowers of death. And if ye still be so foolhardy as to bring your Windows laptop to China knowing this we will just suggest a simple rule: never let anyone else touch it. The taskbar you save may be your own.

quick note - it's a pervasive chat program here, but be careful about installing QQ. The chat program was started by some ex-Microsoft employees and is basically impossible to uninstall. Tanked an older laptop of mine. Caution is merited.

VPN and Mac OS have kept me high and dry so far. QQ has yet to sink this ship.

I did however experience a glitch in my computer last summer where my security settings where altered, and I no longer had administrative access to my computer. Weeeeiiiirdd.

yeah. that photo pretty much sums up what it's like to bring a laptop into ANY Chinese computing environment. people should be careful connecting USB keys to their machines as well. a friend was infected that way, as USB dongles bypass the firewall.

@menglelan,

Lol...

是木马(病毒),不过如果以后人们制造出一些“草泥马病毒”的话,应该也很有趣...

俺 actually means the same thing, and is just as slangy, in Japanese! Doesn't sound anything like the Chinese version though!

I use PLECO a lot on my iPhone to decipher these conversations since I still have limited character knowledge. But PLECO does not do idioms! Which makes it more interesting!
