just out of curiosity, how many animals are there? "aspirational cat" is impressed but what does he know. is there some animal whose approbation we ultimately seek, and how many others must we endure before that final encounter?

I always had the impression that "aspirational cat" was only pretending to be impressed. "Disappointed panda" gives it to you straight, but can we ever really please him??

"aspirational cat" is about halfway through the pantheon. love the idea of "disappointed panda" although if it's like everyone else here it's probably more indifferent than disappointed.

Indeed. That's why "apathetic duck" is the best. Having trouble buiding your vocabulary? Still getting some tones wrong here and there? "Apathetic duck" doesn't mind. He knows that, either way, he's going to be roasted and served with little pancakes any day now.

and certainly preferable to "magisterial lion," king of pedants, who while reminding you of his cameo in some hoary word-play will not hesitate to suggest that context could not possibly redeem your sloppy tones. "ahem, have you heard of the sphinx...?"
